Blood Galaxy

Blood Galaxy portrays human blood – the vital fluid of life – as a complex system, a mysterious galaxy, an inner space, as vast as the cosmos. It is created from my selection of blood samples collected and scanned from various people – medical students, artists, family, and friends – from diverse backgrounds, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, and blood types. I have isolated some of the more unique cells and collaged them onto a singular blood substrate to create the image. The forms shown are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets magnified 5,000 to 10,000 times using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Because the electron beam does not transmit colour information, electron micrographs are black and white.
